I Fratelli Taviani took home the Golden Bear yesterday at the 62nd Berlinale film festival in Germany. An amazing achievement for Paolo and Vittorio, the Italian brothers who are both in their 80s and have been making groundbreaking movies since the ’60s. I can’t wait to see the winning film, Caesar Must Die, which is apparently a “sort-of” documentary about a group of inmates at a Roman prison rehearsing for an “in-house” production of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar. Last week I painted my nails straight gold, which chipped and wore off over the course of the week. Tonight, I decided to leave the gold polish as is and to just paint on pink tips. Then I put a glossy finish on it. I dig it.

Sofia Coppola directs this campaign short for the new Marni line due to come out at H&M on 8 March. I’m excited about these sometimes earthy, often abstract prints and their boxy, yet feminine shapes. Way more excited than I was in the fall when my roommate and I were perusing the very “Miami Cougar-inspired” line that Versace did for H&M.

There seem to be a lot of Steampunk ‘lab’ sites at the moment. How about the modifications to this old IBM keyboard? I’m at my childhood home sorting through years of clothing and memorabilia this week. Today, in the process, I came across the trunk I used to hold my clothes as a child and decided to give it a good, thorough cleaning. In Boston the week before last, a good friend who has spent a good deal of time at a certain children’s theatre camp, revealed to me his distaste for glitter as a kid’s craft supply. It was kind of a shocking revelation (who DISLIKES glitter, after all?), but once I’d recovered from the blow, I thought I saw what he meant. Glitter is too easy. Glitter is fun in a container. Kids sprinkle that shit on whatever they come across, and then what happens? Parents get tricked into tacking construction paper with glued-on elbow macaroni to the walls in the foyer, because Little Johnny claims it’s art. Ever seen a painting by Pollack and thought “I could do that!”? (Of course you have.) Well, you probably can’t. And Glitter is one of those things that inspires false confidence in a young mind. Glitter is the Mrs. Dash of the Small-Time Crafts World. What I’m thinking about now is how one might successfully translate loose glitter to the adult world. Welcoming suggestions for the jar in the picture.
